Fishing with Pop - Marco White, Jr

"Pop" by Elizabeth Hurley

My grandfather, Pop, was nice, always fun to be with, and was the best grandfather a person could have. Pop died following an extended illness which I knew could not be cured.

One special memory of Pop I hold in my heart is when he and I went fishing. The day began with a hot sun shining over our heads. I got the food ready for our boat trip while Pop gathered the fishing equipment. We went a mile out in Pensacola Bay from Pop's house, which is on the water. Pop put two lines out while I held my fishing rod. All of a sudden, I felt something pulling on my fishing line. I immediately jerked the line to see if I had caught a fish. To my surprise I had. It seemed to be a big fish because I could not reel the line in. I called, "Pop, I caught a fish! Help me reel the line in". Pop helped me, and we got it in the boat. The fish I caught was the only fish we caught that day. Pop and I went home and had a fish fry along with my grandmother's famous hush puppies.

The fishing memory was one of the many memories I have of Pop. Pop died, and I have to find another fishing partner, but I'll never find someone as good as Pop.
